When a new position is created or a vacancy occurs, the departmental manager should contact his or her respective Human Resources Client Manager or, where applicable, the local school or department HR contact person. The HR Manager will work with departments to identify the skills necessary for achieving departmental goals, evaluate positions for appropriate title and grade level within the organization, and assist in developing strategies for recruiting and selecting the best personnel while increasing the diversity of the University’s workforce.  The HR Client Managers are also available to support managers in day-to-day supervisory responsibilities, including the performance appraisal process, and to coach managers on employee relations issues.

The mission of the Center for Career Education is to help students and alumni develop the key competencies necessary to make informed decisions and take the necessary steps to achieve their career goals. The Center establishes connections and facilitates interaction among undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, employers, and organizations to generate opportunities that help students pursue their personal and professional objectives.

All employers and students/alumni use the LionSHARE system to post and search for internship and full-time employment opportunities, respectively.  Employers are invited to post any positions that they may have to LionSHARE to recruit students for casual, non Work-Study positions, internships and full-time opportunities. For details on how to use LionSHARE as an employer, please visit their employer page. For further information of how to access LionSHARE as a student/alum in search of employment, please visit the system log-in page.

Finally, departments may hire students through The Federal Work-Study Program, designed to promote part-time employment for students who are in need of earnings to help finance their education. Note: It is mandatory for departments to submit documentation each year to request work-study positions for the upcoming summer and/or Academic Year program.

Temporary Agencies

After a competitive bidding process, a number of agencies were selected to provide services to the Columbia community.  For a full list of selected agencies, call your local Human Resources office or go on the web to http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/purch/  and click on the “Contracts” button.

The temporary service agencies under contract with Columbia University will release temporary employees at no charge in the event that a department wishes to hire them as a temporary or regular employee on a full or part-time basis. To ensure that no fee is charged in these instances, the agency must receive written notice of the intent to hire prior to an offer being extended.
