The Active Leadership program provides the concepts and the practices of Leadership to help managers effectively develop, coach, empower and lead their teams to higher levels of performance, both in their current position and for their career development at Columbia University. Active Leadership also prepares managers for holding ongoing career growth and developmental coaching conversations with their staff.Recent studies confirm the leader is the prime factor for creating a productive work environment and contributing to higher staff retention.
Who Should Attend?
We are providing the program for all levels of management, or officers who indirectly lead other staff, for example project teams.

After the Workshop, Participants Are Able To:
- Differentiate between “coaching to improve job performance” versus “coaching for career development” at Columbia
- Understand how the foundational principles of coaching affect performance results and career development
- Create a development plan, for themselves and their staff, based on assessed strengths and development needs
- Assess the personal leadership behaviors and attitudes that affect others’ performance
- Determine how ability and motivation affect performance and outcomes, regardless of goals or objectives
- Explore three different leadership styles and know when they should be used to maximize others’ performance
- Match the appropriate leadership style to individuals and specific goals or objectives
- Plan and deliver clear, concise communication to help develop, direct, guide and engage staff
- Understand what people need in order to change behavior or practices
- Use a consistent approach to giving feedback that reinforces desired behaviors, and helps improve performance and strengthen career growth
- Assess performance gaps and improve staff performance
- Coach, reinforce and create a motivational climate for career growth and staff retention
The Active Leadership Program is a 2-day classroom experience, with 2-3 hours of self-study and a leadership survey before attending the classroom.
