Consulting Services

The Learning & Development team offers customized learning solutions for schools and departments upon request.

These services provide an opportunity for in-tact teams or departments to select, customize, and/or create learning programs and organizational development initiatives designed for their specific needs. Our team offers program design, curriculum development, facilitation, organizational development and leadership development expertise. 

We partner with you to ensure the content, scenarios and examples are relevant to the unique needs of your area. The Learning & Development team has a variety of programs that can be customized.  We can also partner with you to source and customize content from external vendors where available.

School and Departments we have provided consulting services to include Columbia University Health Services, CUIT, Student Financial Services, Office of the University Registrar, Columbia College, Division of Behavioral Medicine – Department of Psychiatry, Facilities -  Morningside and CUMC, College of Dental Medicine, Mailman School of Public Health, Center for Research on Environmental Decisions, and many others.

Our programs include:

Managing Change

The Managing Change program is designed for managers and supervisors who are not determining the change initiative, but are responsible for getting others onboard and moving forward with the change.  

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Understand typical reactions to change and the impact on performance and morale
  • Recognize the manager’s role in supporting themselves  and others through change
  • Explore reasons change efforts fail and the leader’s role in achieving the new vision for change
  • Communicate the context and expectations for change
  • Support staff in adopting new roles, responsibilities and performance expectations

Program Length

The Managing Change program is typically a 1/2-day classroom experience for managers within a school or department, however program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.  

Navigating Change

Workshop for all staff within a team or department to understand the phases of change, gain tools for supporting themselves through organizational changes, and seek the support they need to ensure high performance.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Understand typical reactions to change and the impact on performance and morale
  • Support yourself through the different phases of change
  • Identify reasons why change efforts fail
  • Understand the importance of their role in achieving the new vision for change
  • Request the support you need throughout the change initiative
  • Review expectations for adopting new roles and responsibilities

Finding Your Strengths

Based on the Gallup organization’s research and book StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tim Roth learn your individual and team strengths, and explore ways to leverage your expertise in any job role.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Become more aware of their strengths and areas of development
  • Identify their individual strengths-based style and explore how it impacts the team
  • Recognize overall team strengths and potential organizational blind spots
  • Leverage individual and team strengths to further enable success
  • Strengthen the team environment by aligning work priorities with staff engagement
  • Incorporate strengths-based conversations into the performance management process

Program Length

The Finding Your Strengths program is typically a 1/2-day classroom experience for all staff within a school or department, however program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.  

Balanced Scorecard

Customized multi-phased program for leadership teams interested in using the Balanced Scorecard methodology to enhance and/or supplement organizational performance metrics.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Understand the origins, purpose, and framework of the Balanced Scorecard
  • Recognize the benefits of implementing a school or department-wide Balanced Scorecard
  • Establish a Balanced Scorecard for your School, Department, or Division
  • Use the RACI model to assign and ensure greater role clarity and accountability
  • Align Balanced Scorecard initiatives with individual performance goals

Program Length

Business Planning

Customized multi-phased program for leadership teams to develop, clarify, and communicate school, departmental or division level objectives.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Align school/department/division goals with team projects
  • Establish core values and identify target performance attributes for managers and staff
  • Prioritize key projects and establish accountability
  • Review management approach and management assignments (by task or by people)
  • Apply core management tools to planning, coaching, and providing feedback for performance  
  • Establish leadership team communications and best practices

The Business Planning program is typically a series of meetings that leads to a full-day classroom experience for managers within a school or department, however program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.  

Vision Program

The Columbia University Vision Program provides a framework and process for leadership teams to evaluate their current state, identify characteristics of the ideal future state, and set clear direction for moving forward.


What differentiates this vision program from others, is the structured process in which the vision statement is clearly articulated, strategic goals are developed relative to the key themes from the vision, and put into a compelling visual framework that can be articulated throughout all levels of the school or department.

Outcomes of the Program for Leadership Teams:

  • An efficient method for articulating a compelling direction
  • A powerful, clear focus for and approach to strategic planning
  • Common ownership of a clearly articulated statement of the path forward

The Vision program is typically a 1-4 -day classroom experience for senior leaders within a school or department, however program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.  

Active Leadership

The Active Leadership program provides the concepts and the practices of Leadership to help managers effectively develop, coach, empower and lead their teams to higher levels of performance, both in their current position and for their career development at Columbia University.  Active Leadership also prepares managers for holding ongoing career growth and developmental coaching conversations with their staff.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Differentiate between “coaching to improve job performance” versus “coaching for career development”
  • Understand how the foundational principles of coaching affect performance results and career development
  • Assess the personal leadership behaviors and attitudes that affect others’ performance
  • Determine how ability and motivation affect performance and outcomes, regardless of goals or objectives
  • Explore three different leadership styles and know when they should be used to maximize others’ performance
  • Match the appropriate leadership style to individuals and specific goals or objectives
  • Plan and deliver clear, concise communication to help develop, direct, guide and engage staff
  • Understand what people need in order to change behavior or practices
  • Use a consistent approach to giving feedback that reinforces desired behaviors, and helps improve performance and strengthen career growth
  • Assess performance gaps and improve staff performance
  • Coach, reinforce and create a motivational climate for career growth and staff retention

Program Length

The Active Leadership Program is a 2-day classroom experience for managers of all levels, with 2-3 hours of self-study and a leadership survey before attending the classroom. Program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.

Leading Change

The Leading Change program is designed for leaders charged with identifying, creating, planning, implementing and measuring change initiatives for their team, department or school.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Define the change in clear terms that others can understand
  • Assess peoples’ perceptions of the change
  • Determine information people require so they understand the change
  • Complete a gap analysis between perceptions and facts about the change
  • Understand what phase of the change process people are in currently and why
  • Determine appropriate actions to help lead people through the phases of change
  • Understand the root cause of resistance to and support of the change
  • Develop action plans to implement the change

The Leading Change program is a typically a 1-day classroom experience for managers of all levels within a school or department, however program length can be customized as part of our consulting services.

Team Development Program

The Team Development Program is designed to provide teams with the perspectives, skills and tools necessary to rapidly progress through phases of team development to produce results.

Participants Will Learn How To:

  • Utilize a Team Development model to guide and improve team performance
  • Identify and overcome the barriers to team success
  • Establish the team's basic beliefs and determine the team’s purpose/vision
  • Complete and evaluate a team development assessment to identify strengths and areas for focus
  • Improve and enhance individual and team communication skills
  • Identify, recognize and resolve common team problems
  • Conduct focused, productive team meetings
  • Develop action schedules and monitor progress using various tools
  • Plan and conduct team reviews and follow up on actions and achievements
  • Explore and use team decision-making tools
  • Self-regulate by dealing with unwanted counter-productive behaviors on the team
  • Celebrate team progress and results
  • Present team results to senior management
