Eligibility and Benefits for Officers and Family

The benefit varies for Officers and their family members, so please read these sections carefully.

To be able to receive the Tuition Exemption Benefit, Officers must also be accepted into the school they wish to attend, for both degree and non-degree programs. For information about applying, visit Columbia’s Admissions page.

The Tuition Exemption Benefit Program pays tuition costs for Officers each term, up to an amount depending on hire date, job grade and title, and whether they are registered in a degree program. The Program does not cover fees or the tuition charged for auditing courses.

Your spouse’s or same-sex domestic partner’s eligibility depends on your hire date.

For those who are eligible, an Officer’s spouse or same-sex domestic partner must be accepted into the school he or she wants to attend. For information about applying, visit Columbia’s Admissions page.

There are no tuition benefits for the spouses or same-sex domestic partners of Officers hired after July 1, 2011. For spouses and same-sex domestic partners of Officers hired on or before July 1, 2011, the benefit varies based on the Officer's hire date.

To be able to receive the Tuition Exemption Benefit, children must meet the eligibility requirements and also be accepted into the school they want to attend. For information, visit Columbia’s Admissions page.

The amount of tuition exemption granted to an Officer's dependent child depends on the Officer's eligibility, rank and school, and on the level of the courses taken.
