Tuition Exemption Benefits for Officers

Effective February 2007

For Full-Time Faculty and Other Officers of the University

Includes Officers of Instruction, Administration, the Libraries, and Research

The Tuition Exemption Benefit Program pays tuition costs, depending on your eligibility, for undergraduate and graduate courses at Columbia University, Barnard College, and Teachers College.

Note that this is not a reimbursement or remission program; your tuition is simply exempted. However, you are responsible for course fees, textbooks and residence fees, where applicable.

To find out about the benefit available to you, use the links at left. Please read this document carefully before you apply for the benefit. This material will help you be fully prepared.

Columbia University reserves the right to change or terminate the Tuition Exemption Benefit Program at any time. Please note that this program does not cover courses taken outside Columbia University, Barnard or Teachers College.

Eligible Officers, their spouses or same-sex domestic partners, and their children are eligible for tuition exemption; the benefit varies for Officers and their family members, so please read these sections carefully.

The tables in this section give a visual breakdown of eligibility and available benefits for Officers, spouses/same-sex domestic partners, and children.

After you have been accepted as a student in the school, department, or college that you would like to attend, and have registered for classes, you must apply for tuition exemption each term by completing the steps in this section. Please know you must complete the application process as soon as you register; this means your Tuition Exemption and other materials must be submitted to the Student Service Center within five (5) business days after your school's deadline for dropping courses.

On what can the Officer be taxed? This section details taxation, withholding and other related policies and procedures.
