Benefits While on a Leave of Absence

Leave of Absence Less Than Six (6) Months

While on a University-approved leave of absence of six (6) months or less, employee benefit contributions will be charged at that employee’s regular rate.
  • If the employee is receiving a paycheck from the University, s/he will continue to have benefits deductions taken out of each paycheck according to their regular pay schedule.
  • If the employee is not receiving a paycheck from the University (for example, s/he is receiving a payment from NY State Disability), the employee will   be billed by Employee Benefit Plan Administrators, Inc. (EBPA)
    • The employee will receive payment coupons via US mail to their home address from EBPA
    • Employee must remit monthly payments directly to EBPA
    • Benefits coverage will terminate if payment is not received on a timely basis

Leave of Absence More Than Six (6) Months*

While on a University-approved leave of absence of more than six (6) months, employee benefit contributions will be charged at the COBRA rate. This rate begins with the 7th month of any continuous leave.
 
  • If the employee is receiving a paycheck from the University, s/he will continue to have benefits deductions taken out of each paycheck according to their regular pay schedule.
  • If the employee is not receiving a paycheck from the University (for example, s/he is receiving a payment from NY State Disability), the employee will be billed by Employee Benefit Plan Administrators, Inc. (EBPA)
    • The employee will receive payment coupons via US mail to their home address from EBPA
    • Employee must remit monthly payments directly to EBPA
    • Benefits coverage will terminate if payment is not received on a timely basis

Long-Term Disability (Active Officers only)

  • If a Long-Term Disability (LTD) leave of absence is approved, employee benefit contributions will be charged at a monthly rate equal to the $175,000 - $224,999 salary tier for the medical plan and coverage level under which the employee is covered. The rate will be effective as of the first date of the month following the date the LTD leave is approved. The employee will be billed by Employee Benefit Plan Administrators, Inc. (EBPA).  If awaiting a Long-Term Disability decision, the COBRA rate will be charged. If LTD is approved, then the lower rate described above will be retroactive to the first date of the approved leave.
  • The employee will receive payment coupons via US mail to their home address from EBPA
  • Employee must remit monthly payments directly to EBPA
  • Benefits coverage will terminate if payment is not received on a timely basis
